Welcome Back to SeaTown Sports: Reviving Our Passion for Seattle’s Teams
Reintroducing SeaTown Sports, brought to you by Kevin Cacabelos and Brian Elsner
It’s been a while.
I’m trying this writing about sports thing again. I’d love for you to join along. Welcome back to SeaTown Sports.1
A little bit about me
The first time I wrote about sports was in 2008. I started a Seattle sports blog in high school called SeaTown Sports. It consumed all of my extra time. I loved the rush of building a readership and promoting the website to all of my friends. We built a niche in local high school sports but attempted to cover everything in Seattle. It was fun.
SeaTown Sports lasted for a bit, other people kept it going while I was in college, as I tried my hand at more formal sports journalism with the Loyolan at Loyola Marymount University. At LMU, I earned a journalism certificate and was the Loyolan’s Sports Editor. While in college, I continued to write about Seattle sports on the side at SB Nation. I also interned at 710 ESPN Seattle (now Seattle Sports).
After graduation, my writing took a back seat. I started teaching, then I went to law school, and now I’m a practicing attorney in the Bay Area. Other important life stuff happened during this period. I lost my father in 2017. I became a husband to the best partner ever in 2021. And I became a father in 2024. In sum, lots of things happened, and one thing that remained was my itch to write about Seattle sports. The best part about being a sports fan is sharing the experience with others. Writing about sports from a fan perspective is one way to do that. I missed that. And after giving this website a shot the past few months, I have realized I want to keep on writing.
Joining me is a long-time collaborator, mentor, and friend, Brian Elsner. “Elsner” as I call him, taught me history in high school and we worked together in Seattle Prep’s men’s basketball program. I was the team’s manager and Coach Elsner was the associate head coach. After I graduated from Prep, Elsner and I teamed up on a podcast called Wait For It Seattle before podcasts were cool. Like me, Elsner also was the sports editor at a WCC school, writing about sports for “The Santa Clara” at Santa Clara University. He is a talented writer and I know you’ll enjoy reading his writing.
Expectations
Here’s what we want to do with this site. We want to write weekly about Seattle sports. We’re hoping to provide our readers with about three articles a week. Sometimes there will be less. Sometimes there will be more.
When we say writing about Seattle sports, we mean the Huskies, Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders FC, Kraken, Storm, Reign, and most importantly, the Sonics (when they eventually come back). Few sites endeavor to cast as wide of a net as we cast here at SeaTown Sports. In reality, most Seattle sports fans follow more than just one team. We want to give you all the analysis, statistics, exclusive interviews, observations, predictions, and history that we can provide you.
We will also release a weekly podcast on Mondays, Wait For It Seattle2, where we discuss Seattle sports. You can listen to our latest episode here:
It’s available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and on this Substack.
Our readers
We appreciate all our friends and readers who have returned from our previous writing endeavors, and we welcome any new readers who have found us. We want you to be part of this experience and we want to write what you want to read. If you’re reading this, please leave us a comment below. Tell us who you are, how you found us, and what teams you are rooting for. Finally, if you haven’t already, and feel inclined, please subscribe below.
Let’s keep this thing going.
If you’re reading this and asking, why is Kevin saying “welcome” when the newsletter has been up and running since May? A few reasons. First, we never really officially welcomed you to the website. We just started writing. Second, we have a handful of readers who have found us in the past two months, we’d like to welcome them! Third, we have a cool new logo, and I’m counting this as our official launch. By the way, the logo is by Kailey Strachan from Of One Kind.
The Wait For It Seattle podcast, named after Brian’s previous Seattle sports blog is also being resurrected.
I'm glad to see you back at it, Kevin. Wishing you much success.
Gooood post! I studied English in college. I often tell people it means "I write good". Depressingly few people get it. So.
I try to support many things in Seattle including the sports teams. I've never been to a Storm or Reign game. Or a Ballard FC game. I need to go. I'll put 'em on my list. Ok I was not prepared to talk about myself! So I need to stop here for now! HolySpitMarta!
